Wesleyan & Trinity (and a glimpse of Bowdoin)

Ok...so I am now officially a delinquent blogger. Not as bad as Patrick Sanders '08 who posts about once every lunar eclipse on the insidecolby.com web site. Well, anyways, if you are a perspective student, you should check out insidecolby.com - not just to read about Patrick's insights into the world, but also as a good way to get a glimpse into what Colby is all about from the student's point of view.

So two weeks ago we swam in the annual quad meet with Wesleyan, Trinity and Bowdoin. This is one of our favorite meets of the year for all 4 schools as we it is pure NESCAC competition (as the Maine schools swim each other the following week we don't score against each other. The same is true for the Connecticut teams). I've always thought it would be fun to then score the meet Maine vs. Connecticut to see which state wins. It would be a very cool twist to the meet. The meet follows the collegiate 16 event format, and we run two heats of each event allowing each team to have four entries. The heats are casually seeded which sets up some great racing situations and also gives our swimmers a bit of a championhip feel.

Colby went into the meet with the disadvantage of no divers. Both Wesleyan and Trinity had full divers on the boards so our teams started the meet down 0-32. Even with this disadvantage we believed we had a shot at winning both meets. Unfortunately, while we had some great swims and even some big breakout swims, both teams came up short to Wesleyan - although we did run away with the meet verses Trinity. The 1-1 weekend left both teams at 4-4 for the season going into the Bowdoin meet the next weekend. The Bowdoin women looked awfully good at this meet and they in fact beat Wesleyan, and would have beaten us as well if the meet had been scored. But more about this in my next post.

The team voted for swimmer of the meet when we returned to campus...

The women elected Danielle Carlson '10. This was the meet Danielle has been waiting for all season, one where she put everything together. Starting off in her main event the 200 Free Danielle swim her best race of the season of 2:00.90. Her success continued with a season best in the 100 free of 56.77, but she saved her best swim for last where she posted an unshaved best 4:49.27 in the 400IM - which leaves Danielle with the difficult decision on which event - the 200 Free or 400IM - to swim at NESCACs.

The men chose Craig Zevin '11. Craig, who swam in front of his hometown crowd, was one of those team members who had a breakout meet. Starting right off in the medley relay Craig posted his best split of the year in the 50 breast with a 28.05. He then posted a season best and unshaved best in the 100 breast with a 1:03.60. And followed that with a two second drop in the 100 Fly for a lifetime best of 57.94. To finish off the meet Craig posted a casual season best of 23.14 in the 50 free.
